< bonny in Seoul, Korea at October, 2009> 부부 문제로 고민하는 사람들의 절반 이상은 자녀 교육의 의견 차이로 인한 갈등을 호소한다. 닭이 먼저인지 달걀이 먼저인지 알 수 없지만 부부 문제와 자녀 교육은 뗄래야 뗄 수 없는 관계가 있음은 명백한 일이다. 어느 것이 먼저 생겨난 문제이든지 관계없이 두 가지 모두 쉽게 해결되기 어려운 문제들이기에 고민은 깊어만 가게 마련이다. 아동 전문가들은 한 쪽 부모가 야단을 칠 때 다른 쪽 부모는 절대로 그에 반대하는 행동을 해서는 안된다고 권고한다. 공연히 아이의 편을 들어주거나 야단치는 부모의 권위에 도전하는 말도 물론 금뮬이라고 한다. 하지만 현실에서는 이것이 참 어려운 일이다. 내가 야단치는 것은 다 일리가 있는 것이다가도 상대가 야단을 칠 때면 마음이 불편해지는 것이 보편적이다. 꼭 같은 일로 야단을 치면서도 배우자가 아이들 야단칠 때면 쌍심지를 켜고 아이를 감싸고 도는 부모들의 갈등은 흔한 모습이다. 별 것도 아닌 일을 가지고 뭐 그렇게까지 심하게 아이를 몰아 세우냐고 원망하다가 심하게는 부부싸움으로 번지는 일도 종종 보게 된다. 우리 아이들이 어렸을 때 남편과 나도 숱하게 싸웠던 주제가 바로 아이들 야단치는 문제였다. 무엇이든 원칙을 중요시하는 나는 아이들의 잘못된 행동은 하나 하나 다 지적하고 그 자리에서 함께 분석하고 앞으로 나갈 길까지 다 제시해주어야 속이 풀리는 정죄형이었던 반면에 남편은 웬만한 일은 그냥 넘어가고 참다 참다 못 참겠으면 그간의 일이 다 폭발하는 스타일이었다. 내가 아이들을 데리고 야단을 치고 있으면 다른 방에 있다가도 뛰어 와서 아이를 감싸주고 아이의 도피처가 되어주는 것이 늘 나의 마음을 불편하게 했고 그 때문에 시작이 되어 부부 싸움을 한 적도 여러 번 있었다. 아무리 이론을 들이대며 그렇게 하는 것이 오히려 아이에게 악영향을 끼치는 것이라고 설명해도 그 때뿐이지 막상 꼭 같은 상황이 다시 펼쳐지면 어김없이 아이 편이 되어 나를 공격하는 것이었다. 그런데 신기하고 재미있는 것은 아빠가 그렇게 편을 들어주고 막아주는 데도 아이들은 막상 야단치는 나와 비교적 더 친밀했음이었다. 아빠가 막아주면 그것도 그 때뿐이었던 것이다. 억울한 마음의 남편이 이리 저리 분석하고 궁리해 본 결과는 아이들이 대체로 예측이 가능한 성향의 부모에게 더 안정감을 느끼기 때문이라는 것이었다. 야단을 자주 치는 엄마였지만 그래도 어떤 경우에 늘 야단을 맞고 어떤 경우에는 칭찬을 듣는지가 일관성있는 성향이었기에 아이들은 감정의 변화가 비교정 더 있는 남편보다 나에게서 안정감을 느끼는 것같았다. 엄마에게 야단을 맞을 때 편이 되어주는 아빠였지만 오늘은 아무렇지 않게 야단을 안 맞고 지나가는 행동이 내일은 아빠가 다른 일때문에 기분이 나빠 있던 차에 한번에 몰아서 야단을 맞을 지도 모르는 일이었다. 하루는 남편의 기질을 가장 많이 닮은 막내가 심각한 얼굴로 와서 말했다. "아빠, 이제 엄마가 야단칠 때 제 편 들지 말아주세요." 딸 넷의 막내인지라 아빠의 사랑을 독차지하는 것은 물론이고 나이에 비해 말재주가 많아 우리 집의 재롱둥이여서 막내를 야단치면 남편이 늘 막아주곤 했다. 내가 야단을 칠 때마다 아빠를 부르거나 아빠 등 뒤에 숨곤 해서 언니들의 시샘을 사기도 했는데 막내의 반응이 너무나 의외였다. "왜? 엄마는 네가 좋아하는 줄 알았는데?" 남편의 표정을 살피니 기가 막혀하는 얼굴이었다. "괜히 아빠가 편들어줘서 오히려 엄마가 화나서 더 많이 야단을 치시는 것같아요. 그냥 원래 엄마가 생각한 만큼만 야단 맞으면 되는데 아빠 때문에 오히려 손해에요." 당돌하기도 했지만 사실은 정확한 묘사였음을 인정하지 않을 수 없었다. 사소한 일로 야단을 치다가도 남편이 아이 편을 들면 유치하게도 공연히 그 불만을 아이에게 쏟아붓느라 아이를 더 많이 야단치게 되는 나의 모습을 아이는 알고 있었던 것이다. "허, 그동안 마누라 위협을 무릎쓰고 제 편들어 준 거 다 물거품이구만." 그 일로 부모의 일관성과 예측 가능성은 아이들의 정서가 안정되는 데에 큰 영향을 미친다는 것을 남편은 뼛속 깊이 체험하게 되었다. 그뒤로 남편과 나는 누구 한 사람이 아이들을 야단칠 일이 있으면 다른 쪽에서 반드시 지원 사격을 하는 것을 원칙으로 하게 되었다. 설령 그 순간에는 이해가 가지 않아도 일단 그 자리에서는 배우자의 말에 전적으로 동의하는 모습을 아이에게 보여주려고 최선을 다한다. "왜 아빠를 그렇게 화나게 하니? 아빠니까 그만큼만 화내고 끝났지 엄마라면 더 크게 화를 냈을 거야. 아빠가 화를 참느라고 힘들었겠다. 너를 사랑하니까 참으시는 거야." "너희들 왜 엄마 힘들게 하니? 얼마나 힘들면 엄마가 저렇게 화를 내겠니? 아빠가 엄마 기분 풀어지게 해 볼테니까 너희들은 빨리 가서 엄마한테 사과해." 그동안 우리 부부의 십팔 번이 된 맞춤 대사(?)이다. 아무리 방금 전 부부싸움으로 화가 나 있었어도 아이들에게는 우리가 절대로 분열되지 않은 한편이라는 것을 보여주려고 애를 쓴다. 혹자는 아빠나 엄마의 부당한 질책으로 상처받는 아이때문에 가슴이 아파서 아이를 보호하기 위해 배우자에게 맞선다고도 한다. 하지만 신체적/정서적으로 심각한 아동학대에 이르는 수준이 아니라면 아빠나 엄마의 야단보다 아이를 더 망가뜨리는 것은 부부의 불화의 모습이다. 부부의 불화처럼 아이를 불안하게 하는 것은 없기 때문이다. 때때로 남편이 너무나 불합리한 이유로 아이를 야단칠 때, 그래서 나도 화가 올라오려고 할 때 (늘 그렇게 하지는 못하지만 열번에 한 두번이라도) 나는 꾹 참고 이렇게 얘기한다. "아빠가 좀 엉뚱하지? 그래도 엄마는 세상에서 아빠가 제일 좋아. 좀 말이 안 될 때에도 아빠 너무 귀엽지 않니?" 사춘기의 딸들은 눈살을 찌푸리며 몸서리를 치면서도 그 말이 싫지는 않은 모양이다. 제가 억울하게 야단을 맞고 있었다는 것은 잊어버리고 이내 깔깔거리며 엄마 아빠가 별종이라는 듯이 고개를 갸우뚱거리곤 한다. 물론 잠시 후 남편과 둘만의 시간이 되었을 때 앞서 아이를 야단친 이유에 반대하는 의사를 표시하는 것은 물론이다. 하지만 적어도 아이의 앞에서는 나의 배우자를 전적으로 지지해주는 것이야말로 아이도 살고 남편도 살고 결국 가정이 사는 길임을 날마다 마음에 새기려고 애써본다. 엄마 아빠는 같은 편이라야 한다. 엄마 아빠가 한 배를 타고 있지 않은 이상 가정은 산으로 가게 마련이고 어느 쪽 배를 타야 하나를 고민하면서 아이들의 삶은 일그러져 버리게 마련이다. 아이들에게 부모는 양분할 수 없는 존재이기 때문이다. original posting is here-> http://blog.naver.com/kmchoi84/90063917116

I appreciate that my husband(jawoo) and my old friend "Kyungmin Kim"  and "Sangwon Kang" who helped Jawoo take care of Bonna and Bonny, when I was in the conference for 5 days. They also took a vacation for us and introduced lots of things to see, and lots of things to eat. Semantic Technology Conference is the largest conference in the industry for users, technologists, publishers, developers, innovators, academics, entrepreneurs, and investors. It brought the most updated knowledge and trend in the semantic community. So, it was a great chance to verify and update our knowledge of semantic technology and collect other recent works, which could be applied to our project. The conference offered a variety of interesting programs including tutorials, case studies, keynotes, panels, and interview, as well as 220 hours of presentations focusing on financial services, pharmaceutical/healthcare/life sciences, application development, government/military, and semantic search/data discovery/linked data, among others.[i] In this year, the latest developments from Google, Yahoo!, bing.com (Microsoft), Adobe Systems, Oracle, Metatomix, STI International, and Delve Networks were presented.  The New York Times announced to publish the NYT Annotated Corpus (XML tagging) and the NYT Index in the "Linked Data Cloud" [ii]in order to open to the public. FAO Country Profiles introduced one hour presentation about “Integrating country-based heterogeneous data at the United Nations: FAO’s geopolitical ontology and services” to the non-technical business audience. They were impressive with our work and asked over 10 questions and many people including US government agency(Department of State)  asked following-up meeting for using the geopolitical ontology and services.  In addition, Semantic Technology Conference invited a leader of FAO Country Profiles to the “Enterprise Data Roundtable” and discussed issues about semantic technology in large organizations.
